Hypnotherapy for Phobias: Finding Your Freedom

Treating Phobias with Hypnotherapy
Phobias, those irrational and intense fears of specific objects or situations, can be debilitating for those who suffer from them. From the fear of flying to the fear of spiders, phobias can limit one's life experiences in case they are exposed to the object of fear. Traditional treatments such as exposure therapy and medication have been effective for some, but for those seeking an alternative non medicated or confrontational approach, solution focused hypnotherapy using a ‘stress bucket emptying’ approach, rewinding and reframing is something to be considered .
Understanding Phobias
When you dig deeper you may find that phobias are more common than you might think, affecting millions of people worldwide. These fears are characterised by their intense, irrational nature and can cause significant distress and interference in daily life. Some common phobias include:
Arachnophobia (fear of spiders)
Acrophobia (fear of heights)
Claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces)
Aviophobia/ Aerophobia (fear of flying)
Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes)

So, what are Phobias?
Phobias often start in an innate way in the past where there has been a mildly stressful event that the brain associates with the object causing the phobia e.g. a parent screaming at something else in the presence of a spider. The phobia is then embedded. The response to the trigger is generated in the brain as it perceives it as a threat to life. The triggers for phobias can vary widely, but their impact on individuals is often profound.
Can hypnotherapy help phobias?
Therapies, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy, have been successful in helping many people overcome their phobias. However, some individuals find these methods challenging, uncomfortable, or even ineffective and so solution focused hypnotherapy is ideal as it is not analytical and doesn’t involve the client ‘facing’ their fear. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses psychological techniques including the gentle ‘miracle question’ guided trance which is similar to when daydream. In this trance-like state, individuals become highly receptive to suggestions and are better able to explore their unconscious mind. Hypnotherapy for phobias aims to reprogram the unconscious thoughts and emotions associated with the phobia. It is not a quick fix and may take a 3-4 weeks depending on the individual.
How Does Hypnotherapy Work for Phobias?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy involves an explanation of how the brain works in relation to the phobia, some goal setting, intention or affirmations. The next step is emptying the stress bucket so the client practices releasing unhelpful thoughts of feelings. We use trance and the client is given an MP3 to take home.
The next session continues on the same theme depending on how much stress is present. It is important that this is managed before focusing on releasing the phobia.
When the client is ready I use a technique called rewind-rewinding the fear.
The following session reframes the experience thus changing response to the trigger; thus reprogramming the individual's response to the phobia. This is achieved by suggesting new, more positive associations and responses to the feared object or situation using the clients own words.
